PROCEDURE
The 2024 Praelusio Competition “Baroque to Modern” is open for musicians of any nationality born on or after July 2, 2006 and on or before July 1, 2019.
APPLICATION DEADLINE

Each contestant competes within their current age category.
INSTRUMENTS
Each contestant competes within their own instrumental category.
Keyboard: Piano
Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello
Woodwinds: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet
TIME FRAME
10 Minutes or less
REPERTOIRE
One substantial composition from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary periods.
JUDGING PROCESS
Jury members will judge all contestants except for when a contestant is a jury member’s current student, in which case, a substitute juror will judge instead.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
- Completed online Application Form.
- Photocopy of your birth certificate, passport, or driver’s license. We strongly suggest crossing out any information other than your name, nationality, and birthdate. NOTE: If you are a non-US passport holder and have been selected as a Praelusio Competition winner, you are responsible to obtain documentation and visa for entry to the United States in time for the winner’s concert. NYIAA will provide a letter of confirmation for visa purposes upon request.
- A YouTube or Vimeo link. The recording time frame should be 10 minutes or less and must be suitable for evaluation as described in the Qualification of the Youtube/Vimeo link section. Please email competition@praelusio.com to inquire about any concerns regarding the time frame.
- Application Fee. Payment $200 via Paypal (with additional $5 processing fee.) The application fee is non-refundable. NOTE: Applications will only be fully accepted when all required documents have been received. No change of repertoire is allowed after the application deadline of July 1, 2024.
QUALIFICATION OF THE YOUTUBE/VIMEO LINK
- The Youtube/Vimeo links from the contestants’ performances will be auditioned and judged by the competition committee.
- All Youtube/Vimeo links must be recorded in an appropriate venue. In order for the contestants’ performances to be clearly evaluated, the recording must be of high quality visually and audibly. NYIAA reserves the right to not accept the recording if the jury members are not able to see or hear the clarity of the performance.
- Contestants should be dressed appropriately.
- The recordings should be 10 minutes or less. Memorization is required for all piano pieces. Violin, viola, and cello contestants must memorize all pieces with the exception of Sonatas.
- Using an electric keyboard substitution on the Youtube/Vimeo link recording will not be accepted for the competition.
- The contestant’s hands must be visible at all times on the screen; the camera angle must be fixed, and the microphones should be positioned at a good distance from the piano.
PRAELUSIO WINNERS SHOWCASE INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES
- Praelusio winners will receive an award certificate on the day of the Winners Showcase.
- Praelusio winners will perform only the piece/pieces from the competition repertoire and selected by the judges of the competition.
- One publicity photograph, preferably in digital format with a resolution of at least 200 DPI. Physical copies should be the size of 5 inches by 7 inches to 8 inches by 11 inches. All copies are non-returnable. This photo will be used on the program for the Winners Showcase.
- Short bio (not exceeding 200 words and edited). This information will be used on the program for the Winners Showcase.
- Only piano accompaniment may be used at the Winners Showcase.
- Winners Showcase Fee: $450 (Includes up to 3 original large file digital images with NYIAA logo and up to 10 complimentary tickets)
NOTE: The Winners Showcase fee is non-refundable.
PUBLICITY RULES AND REGULATIONS
- NYIAA does not permit any picture-downloading from the NYIAA website’s gallery page. If you would like to purchase any of the Winners Showcase’s photos in a higher resolution, please contact us at info@praelusio.com.
- If you would like to use any of the photos taken at Merkin Hall, Kaufman Music Center, for any website (including social websites, such as Facebook) or for any publications, you must contact David Bridges, Client Services Manager (dbridges@kaufmanmusiccenter.org) for approval for each picture.
PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT
TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATIONS
Praelusio winners and accompanying family members traveling to New York City for the Winners Showcase must abide by the CDC’s traveling guidelines. Contestants are responsible for all travel and accommodation arrangements.
FOREIGN CONTESTANTS
All foreign contestants are responsible for obtaining their passports and any necessary visas in time. NYIAA will not secure any travel-related insurance for contestants or accompanying persons.
AWARD POLICY FOR PRAELUSIO WINNERS
- Praelusio winners will receive the paper award on the day of the showcase.
- Praelusio winners are expected to attend and perform at the showcase/ceremony.
- NYIAA is not responsible for providing practice or rehearsal spaces for out-of-town or non-US resident Praelusio winners. If there is a need to use a space for practice or rehearsals, please contact NYIAA for venue recommendations. Winners are solely responsible for the space’s rental fees.
